A wireless highway grade crossing system is a crossing warning system that uses wireless communication technology instead of traditional wired connections between train detection equipment and warning devices.
Traditional crossing systems normally use physical wiring to send signals from track circuits or train detection equipment to the crossing controller and warning devices such as lights, bells, and gates.
These wired systems can be expensive to install and maintain. The wiring may also become damaged by weather conditions, vandalism, construction activities, or environmental problems.
Wireless crossing systems use radio frequency (RF) communication to send train detection information from field equipment near the tracks to the crossing control equipment.
In a typical wireless system, trains are still detected using methods such as track circuits or axle counters. Instead of using long wire runs, the train detection information is transmitted wirelessly to the crossing controller.
Once the control unit receives the wireless signal, it activates the flashing lights, bells, and automatic gates at the crossing to warn motorists and pedestrians.
Wireless crossing systems may reduce installation costs, simplify maintenance, increase flexibility in difficult locations, and allow faster installation. However, factors such as signal reliability, interference, security, and power supply must still be carefully considered.
